Let’s learn some new ways to teach your preschoolers prewriting skills. Here are some prewriting activities for preschoolers that makes writing fun. It’s perfect for a tot tray or work shelf activity or you can put it in your workbox if you homeschool.

What you’ll need:

  • Index cards
  • Regular marker
  • Small whiteboard or piece of paper
  • Dry-erase marker
  • Stickers (optional)

Draw a different line style on each index card — dotted line, straight line, double line, etc. Shuffle the cards and put them aside facedown.

Mark each side of the board or paper with a starting point and an ending point for each card — you can use dots, stars, smiley faces, whatever you prefer. If you’re using paper, you can also use stickers as your starting and ending points. And if you have a sheet protector (I get mine at the Dollar Tree), you can slide a piece of paper into the protector and use the dry erase marker on the outside.

Have your child pick a card and then draw that line to connect the two points.

Alternate activity: Assign numbers to the different line styles. Have your child roll a die and follow the directions for each number.

These are easy, simple ways to kick-start your child’s prewriting skills. Which activity is your favorite? Let me know in the comments! And watch my video below to see these activities in action!
