I’m going to show you a few beginning writing activities for toddlers and preschoolers. These are great for beginners who aren’t learning to write letters yet, and these are also excellent activities to help your kids prepare for writing. So some, “Prewriting Activities.”

I prefer to use regular crayons, and I especially like the thicker or triangular ones for younger kids, but you can use whatever writing tool you and your kids prefer.

Lines

First is to teach how to draw just simple lines – both vertical and horizontal. You’ll probably notice your child doing more of a scribble motion at first and making curved lines, and that’s fine, too. They are just practicing! This activity helps them get used to the motion of the horizontal and vertical lines.

Connect the Dots

As they advance you can give a more challenging goal — draw dots on opposite sides of a piece of paper and have them connect the two dots. If you want to be more creative, you can add stickers and have them draw from the orange sticker to the purple sticker, and so on. This makes it a little more fun for the child, especially if the stickers are favorite colors or characters. As they improve, you can shorten the space between the two dots or stickers for more of a challenge.

Circles

Once your child has mastered lines, drawing circles come next. Don’t expect perfection! Your child is still learning and will probably be drawing big, broad circles — and that’s totally fine! The practice of drawing these circles will help your child get ready for writing.

So there you have three easy prewriting activities to help your kids get ready to learn to write. Have you tried any of these with your kids? Let me know in the comments! And check out my video below to see these activities in action.
